Beyond The Badge – LT Kelvin Johnson

LT Johnson grew up in Topeka’s Hi-Crest neighborhood and graduated from Highland Park High school. After high school he attended KU and Friends University earning a degree in Computer Information Systems.

He says he’s always had an interest in law enforcement, but several incidents throughout his life would influence his decision to join the department. Growing up, he witnessed several shootings in his neighborhood and at one point his best friend’s dad was killed. In college, he lost another friend to violent crime.

He joined the Topeka Police Department in 2002 to help and make a difference in the community. He’s since served in patrol as both a CPL and an SGT, five years as a field training officer, two years as a field training supervisor, six years on the accident reconstruction team, in community policing, in support operations, as the Assistant Training Director, and as an LT, the Director of Training, Records, IT, Fleet, Property, the impound lot and is currently the LT in the Narcotics Unit. He is also involved with training academys and has taught ethics and report writing, was lead radar instructor and lead accident investigation instructor and is currently a lead emergency vehicle operator course instructor. LT Johnson says he enjoys the fact that every day is different which affords him to serve the Topeka community in a different way each day.

When he’s not busy at work, he serves as a board member for the Topeka Police Credit Union and also on the board for Kansas Action for Children.

In his free time, LT Johnson enjoys spending time with his family, fishing, playing tennis, and is a skilled woodworker. He’s a huge asset to our department and community and we thank him for his hard work and dedication!
