Why do the School Resource Officers host summer camps? Because relationships with students don’t end with the school year. They must be fostered year round- with known students and NEW students. With students who have personal challenges and students who are role models and peers to other students.
The typical week of a SRO Camp may include presentations from the Bomb Squad, K9 Unit,Response Team, Emergency Management, and from partnering agencies such as the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Topeka Zoo, the Topeka Fire Department and the Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex. But there are also lessons throughout the week- on texting and driving, and alcohol abuse. Not to mention the untold number of informal lessons learned while meeting new people and learning new things.
Today the participants learned about the Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex and the gear they sometimes have to wear.
